Mysterious Cave on Mars

A group of 7-Th grade students from Evergreen Middle School in Cottonwood, California discover a Martian skylight-a hole in the roof of a cave on Mars. The students were participating in the Mars student imaging program at the Mars Space Flight Facility at Arizona State University. The program allows students to frame a research question, then commission a Mars-orbiting camera to take an image to answer their question. Scientist Glen Cushing suggest that these holes are like skylights. At some point the lava channels likely carved out caverns in the rock, and then left behind a tunnel, or a "lava tube" when the eruptions were over. They would have been covered when a solid ceiling of cooled material settled on top, and then sections of the ceiling likely collapsed at come point to form a skylight entrance. Cushing told the students "this pit is certainly new to us, and is only the second one known to be associated with Pavonis Mons." Scientist estimated the pit to be approximately 620 by 520 feet wide and 380 feet deep at the least. The students are very please with their visit and had the opportunities to help and see how thing work when something new is discovered.
What a fun day that would be wouldn't it? This would have been one project i wouldn't want to miss out on, these kids are now a part of history. Its crazy, you never no what will happen and where... this is another reason we should get out and live life!
